Jarbas Barbosa da Silva Júnior has a degree in Medicine from the Federal University of Pernambuco, a master’s degree in Medical Sciences and a doctorate in Public Health from the State University of Campinas – Unicamp and specialized in Public Health and Epidemiology from the National School of Public Health -ENSP/Fiocruz. He has national and international experience in topics related to public health, epidemiology applied to health services, health surveillance, prevention and control of diseases and injuries and management of health systems. In his professional life, he was a physician at the State Health Department of Pernambuco (SES/PE), Coordinator of the STD-AIDS Program of SES/PE, Director of Health Surveillance in and Municipal Secretary of Health of Olinda-PE, State Secretary of Health of Pernambuco, Director of the National Center of Epidemiology – Cenepi/Funasa/MS, Secretary of Health Surveillance and Executive Secretary of the Ministry of Health. He held the position of Manager of Health Surveillance, Prevention and Disease Control of the Pan American Health Organization – PAHO/WHO. Secretary of Health Surveillance of the Ministry of Health. He also served as Secretary of Science, Technology and Strategic Inputs of the Ministry of Health, Director-President of Anvisa. Regional Deputy Director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). Jarbas Barbosa da Silva Júnior was the Brazilian representative on the Executive Committee of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO/WHO), having served as the President of this governing body. He was Brazil’s representative on the Executive Board of the World Health Organization (WHO), serving as Vice President of the agency, and CEO of the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa). He participated in Councils and Committees of international organizations and institutions, being a member of the Board of Directors of the Stop-TB Partnership and a member of the WHO Advisory Group for the Pandemic Influenza Preparedness Framework Advisory Group. He has received several titles and awards, such as Doctor Honoris Causa from the Federal University of Pernambuco, Commander of the Order of Rio Branco and Commander of the Order of Medical Merit from the Presidency of the Republic. He is the author and co-author of articles, book chapters and books in the areas of Public Health, Epidemiology and Public Health Management. He was named Doctor Honoris Causa by UFPE and FIOCRUZ, and an honorary member of the National Academy of Medicine. He has given lectures, conferences and participated in round tables on these topics at national and international events. He is a public health physician, epidemiologist and Director of the Pan American Health Organization and WHO Regional Director for the Americas.
