He holds a medical degree from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), as well as a Master’s and PhD in Biological Sciences (Biophysics) from the same institution.
He has extensive experience in physiology and biophysics, with a focus on cardiovascular physiology, particularly in intercellular communication, stem cells, and cell-based therapies.
He served as Full Professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, later becoming Professor Emeritus, and was also a Visiting Full Professor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York (USA).
He has held several leadership positions in academia and scientific organizations, including Director of the Carlos Chagas Filho Institute of Biophysics at UFRJ, Director of Teaching and Research at the National Institute of Cardiology, and member of the Governing Council of the International Union of Physiological Sciences.
He has also served as Director of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean of The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), Director of Science and Technology at Brazil’s Ministry of Health, and Vice President for Central and South America of the International Society for Cell and Gene Therapy.
He has authored 215 scientific papers, edited books and book chapters, and supervised numerous master’s, doctoral, and postdoctoral researchers.
He has been awarded the National Order of Scientific Merit and the National Order of Medical Merit.
He currently coordinates the National Institute of Science and Technology in Regenerative Medicine (INCT-REGENERA), the National Network for Cell Therapy, and is a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and the World Academy of Sciences for the Developing World.
