Antônio Carlos has a degree in Medicine from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, a doctorate and a master’s degree in Biological Sciences (Biophysics) from the same University. He has experience in the area of Physiology and Biophysics, with an emphasis on Cardiovascular Physiology, working mainly on the following topics: intercellular communication, stem cells and cellular therapies. He was a Full Professor at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, until becoming Professor Emeritus, and Visiting Full Professor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, in New York, United States. He was Director of the Carlos Chagas Filho Institute of Biophysics at UFRJ, Director of Teaching and Research at the National Institute of Cardiology, Member of the Board of Directors of the International Union of Physiological Sciences. He has held the positions of Director of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, Regional Director of The World Academy of Sciences for Latin America and the Caribbean, has assumed the Directorate of Science and Technology of the Secretariat of Science, Technology and Strategic Inputs of the Ministry of Health and was vice-president for Central and South America of the International Society for Cell and Gene Therapy. He published 215 full articles in indexed journals, edited 3 books and wrote 24 book chapters. He supervised 21 post-doctors, 40 doctors and 24 masters. He was awarded the National Order of Scientific Merit and the National Order of Medical Merit. He currently coordinates the National Institute of Science and Technology in Regenerative Medicine – INCT-REGNERA, the National Cellular Therapy Network and is a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and the Academy of Sciences of the Developing World.
