Gabriel Fernandes holds a degree in Biology from the Federal University of Minas Gerais and a Ph.D. in Bioinformatics from the same institution, with a research period at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg, Germany, under the guidance of Dr. Peer Bork.
His main research lines include the study of gut microbiomes, genomic surveillance of infectious agents, and the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning for identification of biological markers and predictive models.
He recently joined the Technical Research Center for Vaccines to incorporate omics data technologies in monitoring the efficacy of immunobiologicals.
He is currently a Public Health Researcher at the René Rachou Institute, Fiocruz Minas, where he coordinates projects integrating genomic data science and public health applications. He is also a member of the Bioinformatics Graduate Program at UFMG and the Health Sciences Graduate Program at Fiocruz, collaborating with various national and international institutions.
