Margareth Dalcolmo

Fiocruz

She holds a PhD in Medicine from the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP), with extensive experience in pulmonology, infectious diseases, and public health.

She has served as President of the Brazilian Society of Pulmonology and Phthisiology and has been a member of scientific committees of the Brazilian Societies of Pulmonology and Infectious Diseases. She also coordinated the Technical Chamber of Pulmonology and Thoracic Surgery of the Regional Medical Council of the State of Rio de Janeiro.

She has authored more than 130 scientific publications in national and international journals, with significant contributions to respiratory diseases and tuberculosis research.

Throughout her career, she has received numerous honors and awards, including Woman of the Year by Revista ELA (O Globo), Personality of the Year by the Archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro and O Globo media group, the Dra. Nise da Silveira Award, the EMERJ Human Rights Award, and recognition among Forbes’ 20 Most Influential Women. She was also awarded the title of Chevalier of the Legion of Honour by the Government of France.

She is currently a senior researcher at the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), a member of the Steering Committee of the RESIST-TB network at Boston Medical School, and the Tuberculosis Research Network (Rede TB). She also serves on the WHO Expert Group for the Essential Medicines List and on the World Bank Regional Advisory Committee for health projects in Sub-Saharan Africa.

She is a faculty member at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC-Rio) and a weekly columnist for the newspaper O Globo (“Hora da Ciência”). Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, she has been an active science communicator in the media, with more than 600 interviews and public appearances.

She currently serves as Senior Researcher at the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz).
