Paulo Marchiori Buss is a physician, with a Master’s degree in Social Medicine from the State University of Rio de Janeiro and a Doctorate in Sciences from the Global Health and Sustainability program at the School of Public Health, University of São Paulo. He completed a medical residency in Pediatrics and is a certified specialist in Pediatrics by the Brazilian Society of Pediatrics and in Public Health by the National School of Public Health. He served as Vice-President of the Executive Committee of the World Health Organization. He represented Brazil at the last fifteen World Health Assemblies and in various meetings of the Pan American Health Conference and the Executive Board of the Pan American Health Organization. He was President of Fiocruz for two terms and Director of the National School of Public Health of Fiocruz twice, having also served as Vice-Director of ENSP and Vice-President of Fiocruz. He represented Brazil in the Health Council of the Union of South American Nations (UNASUL) and in the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP). He received from the Presidency of the Republic the Grand Cross of the Order of Medical Merit and the Order of Rio Branco, for his significant services rendered to Brazilian foreign policy. He is the author of six books and over 200 technical-scientific articles published in national and international journals. He has delivered more than 600 lectures at significant events in the fields of public health, health promotion, social determinants of health, health diplomacy, and global health. He holds an Honorary Doctorate from ISALUD University in Argentina and Nova University of Lisbon in Portugal. He is an Emeritus Professor at Oswaldo Cruz Foundation, a researcher and full professor at the National School of Public Health at Fiocruz, a full member of the National Academy of Medicine of Brazil, and an honorary member of the Portuguese Academy of Medicine and the National Academy of Medicine of Argentina. He is currently the director of the Center for International Relations in Health at Fiocruz and the Collaborative Center for Global Health and South-South Cooperation of the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization.
