Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus holds a BA in Biology from the University of Asmara, Eritrea, an MSc in Infectious Disease Immunology from the University of London, UK, and a PhD in Public Health from the University of Nottingham, UK. He has served in the government of Ethiopia as Minister of Health and Minister of Foreign Affairs. He is a past Chair of the Global Council to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. As Minister of Health, he has been praised for a series of comprehensive health system reforms that have substantially improved access to health services. These include hiring and training approximately 40,000 workers, reducing infant mortality from 123 per 1,000 live births in 2006 to 88 in 2011, and increasing the number of doctors and midwives. He is a malaria researcher, a doctor in community health, and the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO).
